On October 26, 1995, Fathi Shqaqi, one of the most prominent Palestinian figures of his generation and the founder of the "Islamic Jihad" movement, was martyred in Malta.
He was born in 1951 in the Rafah refugee camp. His family was displaced from the Palestinian village of Zarnuqa in 1948. Shqaqi studied mathematics and then medicine in Egypt, and later worked as a paediatrician.
A turning point in the formation of his views was the defeat of the Arab armies in 1967. Shqaqi came to believe that the Palestinian issue should be central to the political and religious agenda of the Islamic world. In the early 1980s, he became one of the founders of the "Islamic Jihad" movement and its key ideologue.
In 1988, he was deported from Palestine by the occupying authorities. He lived in Lebanon and then in Damascus, continuing his political activities outside his homeland.
On October 26, 1995, Shqaqi was martyred in Malta. He was killed by the Zionist intelligence agency, "Mossad." His funeral in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus was attended by tens of thousands of people.
The martyr Fathi Shqaqi remained a man who dedicated his life to the Palestinian cause. His ideas still hold a significant place in the history of Islam.
