“Make My Blood a Light”: The Final Will of Martyred Journalist Anas al-Sharif
Palestinian reporter leaves a powerful farewell, entrusting the world with the cause of Palestine and condemning global silence in the face of genocide
Anas al-Sharif, a 28-year-old Al Jazeera correspondent from the Jabalia Refugee Camp, left behind a searing final will — a testament of courage and unshakable resolve.
“This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice,” he wrote earlier this year, anticipating martyrdom at any moment.
On Sunday, targeted Israeli strikes on Gaza City claimed his life, along with four other Al Jazeera personnel. Sharif’s death marks yet another loss among the roughly 240 journalists killed since the start of the October 2023-present Israeli genocide in Gaza.
A Voice for His People
Sharif’s will reflects a lifetime of sacrifice and defiance in the face of constant threats.
“I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabalia Refugee Camp,” he wrote.
He spoke of enduring “pain in all its details,” tasting “suffering and loss many times,” yet never hesitating to convey the truth “without distortion or falsification.”
Condemning Global Silence
His words carried a sharp rebuke for the world’s indifference:
“Those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath… were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre our people have faced for more than a year and a half.”
“I Entrust You with Palestine”
Sharif’s will was not merely a farewell; it was a call to action.
“I entrust you with Palestine — the jewel in the crown of the Muslim world, the heartbeat of every free person in this world. Pursue this cause until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland.”
Even in his final moments, he called for perseverance:
“Make my blood a light that illuminates the path of freedom for my people and my family.”
A Warning Before the End
Just before his death, Sharif warned of the Israeli regime’s latest push to fully occupy Gaza City, describing the catastrophic toll: tens of thousands killed, hundreds of thousands wounded.
“If this madness does not end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”
Sharif leaves behind his wife, two children, and mother. His martyrdom joins the memory of other Palestinian journalists deliberately targeted for their work — their courage an enduring testament against oppression.
