Moustafa Badreddine: A Martyr Who Carried the Flag of Victory
Remembering a Commander’s Legacy in the Struggle Against Occupation and Extremism
Moustafa Amin Badreddine, also known as Sayyed Zulfikar, was a prominent military leader whose life was marked by dedication to resistance and the defense of his homeland. Born in Beirut on April 6, 1961, Badreddine joined the Islamic resistance early in his youth. In 1982, he formed and trained groups to confront the Zionist entity, becoming one of the most notable fighters during the Israeli invasion of Beirut and Khaldeh, where he was wounded in battle.
Throughout his career, Badreddine played a central role in organising and leading military operations against occupation forces. In 1992, he became the commander of a central military unit, developing strategies and overseeing numerous operations that contributed to the withdrawal of occupying forces in May 2000. His leadership was instrumental during major aggressions in 1993 and 1996, compelling international recognition of the resistance’s legitimacy and its right to defend its country.
Badreddine was also pivotal in planning and supervising significant operations, such as the Ansariya operation in South Lebanon in 1997, which resulted in heavy losses for elite enemy troops. He was credited with dismantling numerous spy cells and maintaining the security of his nation.
With the onset of the conflict in Syria in 2011, Badreddine was among the first commanders to confront extremist groups, continuing his efforts until his martyrdom in Damascus on May 13, 2016. He was killed in a large explosion near Damascus International Airport, an attack later attributed to artillery bombardment by hostile groups in the region.
Despite being targeted by international sanctions and accusations, Badreddine remained steadfast in his commitment to resistance. His martyrdom was seen as a rallying point, strengthening the resolve of those who continue to fight against occupation and extremism. Thousands gathered to honour him, affirming their determination to pursue the path he had set and to continue the struggle for liberation.
Moustafa Badreddine’s legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and sacrifice, inspiring future generations to uphold the values for which he gave his life.
