The Pursuit of Knowledge as Devotion
In the tapestry of those who sacrifice their lives for a higher cause, there are stories that transcend the cold arithmetic of casualty figures. They are stories of profound devotion, familial bonds, and the unbreakable spirit of faith. The story of 15-year-old Hosna Foladvand and her father, Ali Foladvand, is one such testament to the eternal witness of the martyrs.
Hosna knew precisely what her life’s purpose was. Captivated by her father’s work as a physicist in Iran’s peaceful nuclear science and technology sector—a field he dedicated over two decades to—she envisioned a future mirroring his. Her ambition was not rooted in worldly prestige, but in a deep-seated desire for intellectual and spiritual contribution.
“I don’t want to study experimental sciences or medicine; I will study mathematics so I can become a scientist like my father,” she once confided in her uncle, Mohammad-Taqi Foladvand. Deeply attached to him, Hosna shared not only his intellect but his unwavering religious faith and character.
The Prophetic Wish
Ali Foladvand understood the heavy burdens and inherent risks of his scientific endeavours. He had warned his beloved daughter of the dangers that shadowed his path. Yet, rather than fear, Hosna met these realities with a serene acceptance that spoke volumes of her spiritual maturity. She harboured only one profound wish if the ultimate sacrifice was demanded of them:
“If we are going to be martyred, we should all be together,” she told him.
The First Trial
The crucible of their faith was first tested on the night of June 13, 2025. At 3:20 a.m., an Israeli drone and missile pierced the sanctity of the family’s home in Tehran. The attack was devastating; the ceiling above the bedroom and living room was obliterated. Hosna’s mother, Masoumeh Pirhadi, embraced martyrdom that night, while Ali was left with catastrophic injuries.
Seeking solace and recovery, Hosna and her brother, Alireza, returned to their mother’s familial roots in Borujerd, Lorestan province. Meanwhile, Ali remained in Tehran to undergo gruelling medical treatment. Even while battling his own severe wounds, the grieving father carried the immense emotional burden of supporting his children through the shattering loss of their mother.
The Final Reunion
Nine months later, Hosna’s prophetic words materialised in the early hours of March 28, 2026. Two missiles struck the residence where Ali was staying, reducing the building to rubble, killing twelve, and injuring thirty-six. The US-Israeli strike claimed the lives of both the devoted father and his brilliant daughter.
The aftermath presented an agonising reality for the surviving family. As her uncle Mohammad-Taqi heartbreakingly recalled, they were torn between unbearable duties: “We did not know whether we should go to the Martyrs’ Cemetery and stand beside my brother’s body, remain beside Alireza at the hospital while he was in a coma, or search for signs of Hosna’s body.”
A Legacy Beyond Numbers
Today, Alireza stands as the sole survivor of his immediate household. Having witnessed the martyrdom of his mother in the first attack, and his father and sister in the second, he faces a future anchored in profound loss yet illuminated by their towering sacrifices.
The Foladvand family’s story is a stark reminder that behind every geopolitical conflict and every sterile statistic, there are human souls driven by love, faith, and conviction. Hosna and Ali Foladvand did not just dream of a future built on science; they built a legacy of martyrdom that will echo through the annals of history. Their journey stands as a luminous beacon on the path of the eternal witness.
