“And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, ‘They are dead.’ Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.”
— (Quran, Surah al-Baqarah, Chapter 2, Verse 154)
In the tradition of divine struggle, the path to Shahada (martyrdom) is never walked alone. It is an unbroken chain of light, stretching from the sacred precincts of Al-Aqsa to the highest heavens. Since the historic events of October 7, 2023, the Zionist regime has sought to decapitate the Palestinian resistance by targeting its most prominent leaders. Yet, in the school of true resistance, martyrdom is not an end; it is the ultimate graduation.
These men—Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, Saleh al-Arouri, Mohammed Deif, Marwan Issa, Abu Obeida, and Raed Saad—did not merely command armies; they carried the spiritual and ideological weight of a besieged people. They understood that a nation’s true foundation is its memory and its unwavering demand for justice. Their sacrifices stand as an eternal testament to a struggle that transcends the battlefield.
Ismail Haniyeh: The Steadfast Statesman
Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of Hamas, was not just a political leader; he was the embodiment of Sabr (steadfastness). Born in the al-Shati refugee camp, his life was intrinsically tied to the soil of Gaza and the plight of its displaced people. His martyrdom in Tehran in July 2024, while attending the swearing-in of a fellow revolutionary ally, cemented his status as a pan-Islamic symbol of unity.
Haniyeh endured a devastating personal cost for his convictions. Over 20 members of his immediate and extended family were martyred in Israeli airstrikes, yet his heart never wavered. He remained a calm, articulate voice on the global stage, articulating the moral and ideological necessity of resistance against apartheid. His legacy teaches us that true leadership is rooted in profound humility and an unbreakable bond with one’s people.
Yahya Sinwar: The Mastermind of the Frontlines
Known affectionately as “Abu Ibrahim,” Yahya Sinwar’s life was a masterclass in ideological endurance. Having spent 23 years in the darkness of Israeli prisons—including long periods in solitary confinement—he emerged not with a broken spirit, but with a sharpened vision for liberation.
Sinwar was the architect of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, a historic move that shattered the illusion of the occupier’s invincibility. When he was martyred in Rafah in October 2024, the images of his final moments spoke louder than any eulogy. Found in combat attire, rifle in hand, he did not flee to the tunnels he had masterminded; he faced the enemy on the open battlefield.
He did not leave Gaza. He did not surrender. He attained Shahada exactly as he had lived—on the front lines of the struggle he had devoted his life to.
Saleh al-Arouri: The Architect of the West Bank
Martyr Saleh al-Arouri dedicated his life to ensuring that the flame of resistance would not be confined to Gaza. As the deputy head of the political bureau, he was instrumental in fortifying the presence of the Al-Qassam Brigades in the occupied West Bank, proving that the spirit of Jihad cannot be exiled.
Despite decades of forced exile in Syria, Turkey, and Lebanon, and constant threats from the Zionist regime, al-Arouri remained a strategic pillar for the Palestinian cause. His assassination in Beirut in January 2024 was a cowardly attempt to sever the link between the fronts of resistance. Yet, his legacy lives on in every youth in the West Bank who rises to defend their land and dignity.
Mohammed Deif & Marwan Issa: The Shadows of Al-Qassam

Mohammed Deif and his deputy Marwan Issa were the silent guardians of Gaza’s subterranean fortresses. Deif, a legendary strategist who survived countless assassination attempts, devoted his life to building the military capabilities of a besieged people. He understood that a defenceless nation cannot negotiate its freedom.
Alongside him was Marwan Issa, a veteran whose life was marked by imprisonment and an unwavering commitment to the Palestinian struggle. Together, they engineered the vast tunnel networks that became the arteries of the resistance. Their martyrdom in the “greatest battle” they authored was the culmination of decades of silent, tireless devotion. They taught the world that true strength lies in preparation, patience, and an unshakeable trust in the Divine.
Abu Obeida: The Unsilenced Voice
For over two decades, the masked face and composed voice of Abu Obeida became the psychological anchor of the Palestinian people. As the spokesman of the Al-Qassam Brigades, he did not merely deliver military updates; he dismantled the occupier’s psychological warfare with eloquence and profound ideological clarity.
By keeping his identity hidden, Abu Obeida transcended the individual, becoming the very voice of the resistance itself. He famously described Gaza as “the greatest military school for a people’s resistance.” His martyrdom, confirmed after a long silence during the war, proves that while the voice of truth may be temporarily silenced, the echo of its message will reverberate through generations.
Raed Saad: The Veteran of Operations
Martyr Raed Saad, a senior commander in the Al-Qassam military council, represented the deep institutional knowledge and operational brilliance of the resistance. Assassinated in a brazen violation of the ceasefire in late 2025, his life was defined by his tireless work behind the scenes to equip and organise the defenders of Gaza. His sacrifice adds another luminous link to the chain of Palestinian martyrdom, reminding us that the struggle for liberation requires both the visionary and the builder.
Reflection: The Eternal Legacy
The martyrdom of these prominent leaders is not a defeat; it is a profound spiritual victory. In the tradition of the righteous, their blood has watered the seeds of future generations. They have joined the great caravan of martyrs, leaving behind a legacy that transcends geography and time.
As the Palestinian people continue their sacred struggle for the liberation of Al-Quds, they do not walk in the shadows of death, but in the radiant light of those who have already attained the highest honour. The chains of occupation may bind the land, but they can never shackle the spirit of a people whose leaders have shown them the true meaning of Shahada.
